Angels, Jinn & Devils

What is an Angel?

An Angel is a creation of Allah the Most High (God) created from Noor (Light). They are not born, and are therefore not young or old, infant or gender specific. They are of exemplary conduct, serve Allah Almighty, obey all commands and do not transgress. Hence there is no concept in Islam as a FALLEN ANGEL, as per the story of the Devil in Christianity. They do not have the need to eat, drink, sleep or procreate. Angels also do not have free will like Humans and Jinns.

“All praise be to Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the Appointer of angels as message bearers, who have two, three or four wings. He increases in creation what He pleases. Undoubtedly, Allah is Potent over everything.”
- Commentary of the Holy Qur’an, Surah al-Fatir (Chapter: The Originator), 35:1.

What is a Jinn?

Jinns are a creation of Allah the Most High (God), and similar to human beings, have free will, needs and desires, are male and female, and are born and grow old. They are different from humans in that they are created from a type of electricity, referred to as a smokeless fire in the Qur'an (55:15). Due to this nature, they remain beyond the scope of vision of ordinary human beings. It should be noted that the Prophets, Companions and Saints of Allah Almighty are capable of seeing Jinns.

“And [the polytheists] have made jinns as associates, of Allah, whereas He created them. And they devised from him sons and daughters without any knowledge. Holy is He and Exalted far above their descriptions.”
- Commentary of the Holy Qur’an, Surah al-An'am (Chapter: The Cattle), 6:100.

What is Shaytan/Devil?

Shaytan, also known as the Devil or Satan, was created a Jinn by the name of Azaazeel. He disobeyed Allah (God) in refusing to prostrate before the Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, and was thus cursed, became the devil/procurer of evil and named Iblis. All his offspring are born devils and their purpose is to lead people astray from the straight path of Allah the Most High.

“O Children of Adam! Beware! Let not the Devil tempt you, as he brought your parents out of Paradise, stripping them of their dress that they may see their shameful parts. Surely, [Iblis] and his tribe see you, from where you see them not. Certainly, We have made the devils friends of those who do not believe.”
- Commentary of the Holy Qur’an, Surah al-A'raf (Chapter: The Heights), 7:27.
