What is Islamic Healing?

A form of healing utilising the Holy Qur’an, namely through the recitation of ayat (Qur’anic verses) for the removal of sorcery and sickness. In this way, we are able to remove most, if not all, of the afflictions through the help of Allah the Most High (God). All healing and cures are from Allah alone and no healing can be done without the help of Allah Almighty.

And say, “Truth has come and the falsehood has vanished. Undoubtedly, the falsehood was certain to vanish.”
- Commentary of the Holy Qur’an, Surah al-Isra (Chapter: The Night Journey), 17:81.

What is Ruqyah?

This is the Islamic term for healing with the recitation of Qur’anic verses for the removal of sorcery and sickness.

The question is often raised whether Ruqyah is a legitimate form of healing in Islam? Unless people have been exposed to this form of treatment it is not usually considered as a means of treating medical ailments. It was narrated in Sahih Muslim that ‘Awf bin Malik al-Ashja‘I (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“We used to recite Ruqyah during the Jahiliyyah (Age of Ignorance), and we said: ‘Oh Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him), what do you think about that?’ He said: ‘Present your Ruqyah to me. There is nothing wrong with a Ruqyah that does not involve shirk (polytheism).’”
- Sahih Muslim, Hadith no.5732 (Online ref: 2200)

The above hadith (a report attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) clarifies that Ruqyah is permissible so long as no polytheistic practises are involved, such as readings from other religious scriptures. The Quran, being the only Holy Scripture in circulation narrating Allah’s revelations to humankind, is thus the only means of treating spiritual and physical ailments. The following ahadith highlight the application of Ruqyah in healing as well as its use by the Companions of the Prophet, may Allah be pleased with them all:

It was narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to tell her to recite Ruqyah for protection against the evil eye.
- Sahih Muslim, Hadith no.5720 (Online ref: 2195)

It was narrated that Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, ‘… [The Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him)] said to Asma bint Umais: “Why do I see my brother’s children looking so thin? Are they in need?” She said: “No, but the evil eye has affected them.” He said: “Recite Ruqyah for them.”’
- Sahih Muslim, Hadith no.5726 (Online ref: 2198)

It was narrated by Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet, that the Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him) said to a young girl on whose face he saw yellow marks: “She is affected by the evil eye; recite Ruqyah for her.”
- Sahih Muslim, Hadith no.5725 (Online ref: 2197)

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him) granted permission allowing Ruqyah in the case of the evil eye, stings and pustules.”
- Sahih Muslim, Hadith no.5724 (Online ref: 2196)

It was narrated from Abdur-Rahman bin Al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) that his father said: “I asked Aisha about Ruqyah, and she said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (peace & blessing be upon him) granted a concession allowing a family among the Ansar to recite Ruqyah for every type of poison.’”
- Sahih Muslim, Hadith no.5717 (Online ref: 2193)

It was narrated that Abu Sa‘eed Al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), said: "We made a stop and a woman came and said: ‘The chief of our tribe is ill, he has been stung. Is there anyone among you who can perform Ruqyah?' A man among us got up and went with her, and we did not think that he was good at performing Ruqyah. He recited the Opening of the Book (ie. Surat al-Fatihah) as a Ruqyah for [the chief], and he recovered."
- Sahih Muslim, Hadith no.5735 (Online ref: 2201)

It was narrated that Abu az-Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “And I heard Jabir bin Abdullah say: ‘A man was stung by a scorpion when we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him), and a man said: O Messenger of Allah, shall I recite Ruqyah? He said: Whoever among you can benefit his brother let him do so.'"
- Sahih Muslim, Hadith no.5727 (Online ref: 2199)

The listed ahadith show that it is possible to address both spiritual and physical ailments with the verses of the Qur’an. However, it should be noted that not just anyone may perform this type of healing, as Hazrat Abu Az-Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) mentions above, that the Prophet (peace & blessings be upon him) specifically said, “Whoever among you can BENEFIT his brother let him do so.” This means that the healer must have the ability and spiritual support to perform this work due to its nature in dealing with Jinn and Sorcerers. The Shaykh here at Islamic Healing Australia who performs this work has received permission and blessing from his Murshid (Spiritual guide) belonging to the Qadiri Sufi Tariqah. His work is thus supported by the spiritual blessing of the Awliya/Wali-Allah (Saints/Friends of Allah).

Other Forms of Healing

There are various types of healing. These include:
Tachyon healing, crystal healing, energy healing, colour therapy, sound therapy, touch therapy, music therapy and meditation music.

Islamic meditation music includes the recitation of the Qur'an and Zikrullah (Remembrance of Allah). These recitations will strengthen your iman (belief), increase your spiritual light and make you spiritually stronger.

Healing with Amulets, Charms and Talismans:

We do not use any amulets, charms or talismans in our healing as none of these are relevant. The use of talismans without Qur'anic verses causes more harm than good.

All cures lie with Allah the Most High. We find the Qur'an and the Sunnah both sufficient and the best methods for our treatment. The Sunnah comprises of both the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace & blessings be upon him) and the Sahabah, the Companions of the Prophet (may Allah be pleased with them).

Predictions?

Fortune telling, predictions, divining with arrows, reading the stars, tarot cards, palm reading, crystal ball etc - all of this is haram (not allowed) in Islam. We do not do any predictions. Only Allah Almighty knows the future.

“Surely, with Allah is the knowledge of the Hour (of Doomsday) and He sends down rain and knows what is in the wombs of mothers, and no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Undoubtedly, Allah is the All-Knowing, All-Aware.”
- Commentary of the Holy Qur’an, Surah al-Luqman (Chapter: Luqman), 31:34.
